I love to work outdoors and the Central Coast offers endless possibilities. Painting on location “en plein air” enlivens all the senses and allows the artist to experience a moment in nature on a deeper level. I especially enjoy painting coastal scenes when the Pacific is in full surge choreographing its ever changing dance between sea and shore, ancient Cypresses standing guard. In those moments time stands still, hours pass unnoticed and a sense of reverence and wellbeing takes hold. In my work I try to bring a bit of that wonder and soothing effect that nature offers to our indoor spaces and connect the viewer with what was special about a particular place and time. michaelarmstrongfineart.com |

I feel most alive and free when I paint. I communicate visually, through use of color, line, shape, contrast, design, what I can’t express in words. It is a language that gives rise to deeply personal and yet shared human emotion. annartz.com |

My paintings are often a reflection of my personality with a combination of a calm, compassionate energy and a bold confidence. Collections range from peaceful and serene to vibrant and joyful, reflecting the balance I strive for in life. I’m endlessly inspired by the beauty of the Monterey Bay and Big Sur with the healing energy of the ocean ever present. Cyndy Davis I have had a passion for art since I was 13 years old. I am a retired public school art teacher. My joy is painting and experimenting to tell my stories, but my constant is a pen or brush in one hand and a passport in the other. |

Suzanne Elliott
I am an oil painter who focuses primarily on painting outdoors from nature. Plein Air painting forces me to paint with honesty and immediacy in order to capture the fleeting effects of light and shadow. I find this to be an exciting and inspirational way to paint and I never tire of it. I later use some of my plein air paintings to create larger studio works. I have been painting this way for 35 years now and plan to keep on going - so much to paint and so much to express, so I will never run out of subject matter. Lucky me! |

Kevin Hart My artwork is based on daily observations that quietly grab my attention. All these little visual diaries add to my palette and subject matter. I combine my waking existence with my dreams. My work serves as a bridge between my conscience and sub-conscience, where there is room for freedom and non-judgement; unchartered territory to explore in painting. |

Monica Johnson
I feel that the power of my paintings come from what is inside me, not just from outside influences. For me, a painting is an image with a body and that body contains its spirit. I often begin my paintings by journaling or writing inspirational words on the canvas as a way to set the intention for the painting. In this process I take what draws me to the beauty of nature and human experiences and bring it to the canvas by using my own voice. www.monicajohnsonart.com |

My paintings are works that involve different media, objects, art styles, patterns, shapes and color that create compositions which give the viewer a sense of narration, a sense of experience. I intend for my work to generate multiple internal conversations between the pictorial elements and the viewer. Each image should trigger a cluster of associations with our visual habits and history. Because my images are separated from their expected context the whole of the images are remade into the possibility of new content. StephPaint.Weebly.com |

Sage Lee My current work is a record of my response to the world. But more than that, it’s also an attempt to communicate something larger and deeper, something outside myself, a knowing that occurs in waking life infrequently, but shows up in our dreams. I am currently working with painting onto existing photographs, the result of which is something in the uncanny valley between photography and painting. theschoolforwizards.com |

For me, art is a source of inspiration and order in an unpredictable world. I am a retired occupational therapist and college professor. My paintings are a tribute to human beings participating in daily life. I find joy in painting people, pets and plants. I paint with acrylics to capture my thoughts before my inspiration falters. My work ranges from classic to abstracts. You will see many “works in progress” in my studio. I give away more paintings to friends and family than I sell. For me, being driven by my emotional intelligence to become an artist has been very exhilarating. |

Daphne Wynne Nixon I like to share with others the beauty around us through my paintings. Lately, I’ve been painting on a lavender farm. “If I can see it, then I can paint it” is a motto I say to encourage myself to really “see” difficult subjects that I paint to always know that all the information I need to paint a subject is obtained by truly observing, and then expressing what I see through the language of paint. daphnewynnenixonpaintings.com |

If an artist could reach inside you and pull out your sensations and feelings and express them in colors, tones and shapes, what would they look like? That has been my goal, to affect my viewers on as many levels as possible — emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. I know viewers bring something of themselves to their experience of looking at a painting, and as their experiences change, so, too, will their interaction with the painting, causing the picture to continue to live and grow. 831-676-8899 gloria@shawmarina.com |

Barbara Dill-Varga
I grew up in the midwest, but when we moved to Carmel, I became mesmerized by the beauty of the coast. As local poet Robinson Jeffers wrote: “This place is the noblest thing I have ever seen.” I notice Nature's texture, shapes, color, and patterns that repeat and/or are broken. I like to capture juxtapositions of opposites. I see geometrical shapes everywhere. I enjoy abstract painting with acrylic paint, use some mixed media, and often start my artistic journey through my photographs. barbdillvarga.com |

Painting, drawing, ceramics I am drawn into expressing the landscape as a way to advocate for it. Equilibrium / disequilibrium shows itself in the metaphor of the tree. The California Oaks is a powerful personal symbol of ‘axis mundi' - finding the center / finding home, rooting / creating, which is threatened to be pushed off-kilter through environmental chaos and its resulting anxiety. |

Penny Whent

He also has a new series of folk art paintings featuring vivid colors, flattened perspective, strong forms in simple arrangements, immediacy of meaning and incorporating pointillistic detail. A California General Building Contractor by trade, Tom uses his knowledge of building materials and applications to create the background medium in many of his paintings by applying a thick spackle impasto with a masonry finishing trowel to create a boldly textured first coat before applying several layers of acrylic paint. Tom currently paints daily at his home studio in Monterey, CA alongside his artist wife, Penny, in addition to building custom art frames. whentstudios.com |

Cindy Wilbur Cindy is most known for her “Painterly” or Impressionistic style of painting, favoring serene or pictorial landscapes. She usually gets her inspiration from painting outdoors; “This is where all my senses become a part of my painting, not just sight, but touch and sound. Elizabeth Wrigthman I spend time daily in the woods and fields of Monterey County… in ecstasy near the rivers, ponds and wetlands. At night two owls call back and forth in the adjoining canyon. The cognizance of ordinary sparrows in beautiful, tall, dry weeds, regarding me and one another… The crows who bark at me, mimicking the sound of my broom strokes, sweeping the deck. This is why I paint. wouldgodmilkagoat.com |
