Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour

                                     Art Where It Starts

 

The 2017 Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour, an annual, self-guided tour of artist studios and exhibition spaces across the county, will take place in Peninsula, Coastal and Carmel Valley locations on September 23 and 24; and in Salinas, Salinas Valley, and North and South County locations on September 30 and October 1. Some artists will open their studios both weekends, but most artists participate just one weekend. Tour hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Click here for the tour catalog and maps. The Tour Gala Kick-off Event is free and open to the public, and takes place Thursday, September 14 at the Walter Lee Avery Gallery at Seaside City Hall, 440 Harcourt Avenue, Seaside. Participating artists will be in attendance; food and wine will be served. The gallery hosts a continuing exhibition of work by each participating artist that runs from September 4 through October 26. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; admission is free.  For artist participants: List of 2017 Tour Events and Participant Activities

Arts in Progress, a series of presentations by artists that aims to develop an appreciation and understanding of artists’ creative processes, will feature a panel of photographers at the Center for Photographic Art (CPA), San Carlos at 9th at Sunset Center, on Tuesday, August 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The panel will be moderated by CPA Director Brian Taylor, and include William Giles, Elizabeth Murray, Rachel Short and Jody Royee. Arts in Progress at the National Steinbeck Center will take place on Thursday, September 7, One Main Street, Salinas, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Artist presenters are Hijos Del Sol Director, Jose Ortiz and his students. This event is free and open to the public. Click here for fuller details.

A Free Drawing for Artwork will take place during the second weekend of the tour, on Saturday and  Sunday, September 30 and October 1. View the three works of art and get a free raffle ticket at East Garrison at the Arts Habitat tent, 13130 Chamberlain Ave, East Garrison, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The winning tickets will be drawn Sunday, October 1, at 5:00 p.m. Winner need not be present to win. The framed works to be raffled include a black & white gouache, untitled, by Richard Mayer, 25” x 30,” 1974; “Red Poppies,” a photograph by Mary Hill, 19” x 23,” and “Short Putts,” a signed etching by Charles Bragg, 120/150, 13” x 16.”
